Taking in the Topiary occupies a space between reality and imagination: everything within it is recognisable, yet its heightened colour, abundant growth and slightly exaggerated animals give it the quality of a dream.
The garden is central to the painting. Although shaped and orchestrated by human hands, a garden can also be a hospitable act—an invitation to nature rather than an exclusion of it. It encourages growth, abundance and observation, creating a place in which human design and other forms of life can exist together.
The painting asks what humanity is capable of contributing to the natural world. Throughout history, people have created things of immense beauty that inspire wonder and enrich their surroundings. At their best, gardens might show something of our capacity to live more attentively and generously alongside nature.
When I paint, I enter this world of detail and abundance—a place where the familiar can be seen afresh and beauty discovered in things we might otherwise pass by.
