City Secret
Every city holds its secrets. Beyond the busy streets, the constant movement and the rhythm of everyday life, there are places where the world seems to exhale. Hidden gardens. Quiet pathways. Spaces where nature quietly reclaims the moment and time begins to slow. City Secret grew from my fascination with those rare places—the unexpected sanctuaries that remind us that even in the heart of a city, beauty and tranquillity are never far away.
I didn't want to paint a garden separated from the city; I wanted to imagine one that exists because of it. Beyond the trees, distant lights shimmer softly, hinting at the life continuing just beyond the garden walls. Perhaps somewhere far away a siren echoes briefly before dissolving into the evening air. Those reminders of the city are important. They allow the garden to become something even more meaningful—a place of refuge where the natural world gently softens the noise without ever denying that it exists.
As with all of my paintings, this world grew from a place somewhere between admiration and invention. I have always been inspired by nature's remarkable ability to flourish in the most unexpected places. Here, imagination allowed me to gently extend that possibility, creating a garden where architecture, planting, wildlife and the distant city belong to the same living world. It isn't an escape from reality, but an invitation to imagine how much richer our everyday lives might feel if we made more room for beauty, biodiversity and quiet moments of wonder.
There are stories woven throughout this painting that I hope remain yours to discover. Wander through the pathways, pause beneath the trees, follow the birds as they move through the garden, and allow your eyes to settle wherever curiosity takes them. I never want these imagined worlds to reveal themselves all at once. Like the secret gardens that inspired them, they reward those willing to linger, revealing another quiet encounter or unexpected detail with every return.
Ultimately, City Secret is about hope. It imagines that even within our busiest places there is always the possibility of finding somewhere to pause, to breathe and to reconnect with the living world. If this painting allows you to imagine and be in that place—even for a few moments—then it has fulfilled everything I hoped it could. More than anything, I hope it reminds us that imagination has the power not only to create beautiful worlds, but also to help us see the beauty that may already be waiting, quietly hidden, within our own.
